![]() But from there it gets stuck and won't boot-up.īooting up while holding down the option key gives me the different drives options. Now, when I turn computer on I get the 'initial hello chord', and the white screen with the apple logo. So I had to press the on/off button to power down the computer. When I came back in the room a while later, I had a black screen and the fans were running like a jet engine taking off. It started backing up (but quite slowly), so I left it to it. I then went about setting up Time Machine, to an external drive backup. The install went fine, and I registered Leopard. Yesterday I decided to do a clean install of Leopard (after cloning my Tiger drive to an external). Actually, call up apple, depending on where you live, they usually overnight a box and you should get it back within the week, thatll be faster then the "authorized apple dealer" bull****.I have a Mac G5 dual 2.5 ppc. But in YOUR case, it IS broken and they WILL fix it, just sucks you dont have a apple store closer too you. If you "think" the hard drive is broken, of course they wont help you. They instantly replaced the 250gb drive infront of him and sent him on his way home.Īs long as the hardware is breaking or broken, they will help you. A person I work with is a graphic designer and 2 weeks ago he was messing around with the About Mac > More info screen(i told him to check his battery cycles on his jan 2010 macbook pro 15") and he went down to hard drive on accident before power and the SMART status came up as "FAILED" and he instantly called me and i told him go to apple right now.ĭrove for 45 minutes got to the apple store, showed them the macbook and they ran the diagnostic and guess what? His hard drive was in fact bad, and the slowness he felt a few times but didnt think much of, was his hard drive dieing. Thanks for the info though, Disk Warrior is now up to 4329 errors and still chugging along a day later.I'm gonna let it be and see if I can at least save my data before going further with this. I would just bite the bullet and buy a different hard drive and replace it myself (my roommate's Macbook's original hard drive failed on him too) but being it's barely 3 months old I don't want to pay any more than I already have. Like I said the thing that is the most inconvenient is if the hard drive is going, I doubt the Apple authorized place will do anything about it until it actually fails full on and makes me wait 2 weeks without a computer. I have most of my stuff from Logic backed up so the band I'm working with won't be SOL if I have to reformat. That really sucks.well in any case that'll teach me to not back up. I just don't want to spend a ton of time doing an erase and install once I recover my data (if I can.) only to discover it's going to do the same thing in the near future. In everyone's experience with this issue, has it ever been a hardware failure? I don't hear any clicking or strange sounds, it has been babied, never dropped or roughly handled. I would have just erased and installed like Disk Utility suggested but I don't practice what I preach and back up on a regular basis. My concern is it actually being a hardware failure, what is the likelihood of this? On a barely 3-month old rig I'm really hoping not, there isn't an Apple store within 8 hours of here and the 2 authorized repair dealers in the city are super slow because they only have 1 Mac tech at each and only work Monday to Friday. As long as it can repair it I'll leave it for a couple days, that's not an issue. I got a "Speed reduction due to disk malfunction" error and the number is up past 500 now.it has been going for about 4 hours (it's a 500GB drive) and still chugging along. I did, however, manage to boot into an old install of Snow Leopard I had on my old Macbook before it ate **** and died, which I conveniently had in a hard drive enclosure and hadn't formatted yet.Īfter some reading around I managed to get Disk Warrior up and running on the external drive and started to rebuild the directory on my internal drive. I couldn't boot back up, not even into my Boot Camp partition with XP. My Macbook Pro I just bought in July has slowly become sluggish and locks up, until finally today I got the spinning beach ball of doom for about 15 mins before I turned off the computer.
